ARTEMAR ESTORIL 2010
From 11th September to 10th October 2010, Passeio Marítimo da Costa do Estoril will receive the second edition of Artemar Estoril 2010, an exhibition and international open air sculpture competition on the subject of the sea, with the sea itself having to be represented or incorporated through the use of marine materials or waste.
In 2009, the duo of sculptors Nuno Maya and Carole Purnelle won the ArteMar Estoril Jury Prize, in the amount of 15 thousand Euros and a trip to the Australian exhibition Sculpture by the Sea, in 2010, and also the Public Prize, of 5 thousand Euros, after an electronic vote by the visitors to the exhibition.
For Carlos Carreiras, president of Cascais Atlântico and vice-president of Cascais Municipal Council (CMC), “the mass public adhesion to ArteMar, reflected in the number of online votes, shows that the aim we set ourselves for this event is being achieved. Local residents and visitors are increasingly aware of the subject of the sea and of the need to fully preserve this natural resource that is so important for Portugal.”

Plastic Word - the winning sculpture
Plastic World” is inspired by the subject of plastic waste that is drifting around the oceans, and it is totally made out of plastic material that washed up on Portuguese beaches. It is a depiction of the earth, with its critical message being reinforced by the representation of the countries through their “ecological footprint”.
ArteMar Estoril, this year in its first edition, includes an exhibition and international open air sculpture competition on the subject of the sea, with the sea itself having to be represented or incorporated through the use of marine materials or waste.
In the future, the organizers (CMC, Cascais Atlântico Agency and Dom Luís I Foundation) also intend to set up an Excellence Prize in order for the event to become an international reference on the cultural level and to encourage and Environmental Education Programme aimed at young people.
Costa do Estoril
Costa do Estoril is the world renowned highlight of the region, a major cultural and tourist attraction, equipped with the infrastructures of a big holiday destination: beaches, five star hotels, golf courses and even the largest casino in Europe.
One can find several charming beaches, enhanced by elegant villas and small palaces to the south. Oceanfront walks (Promenades) equipped with high quality restaurants, bars and street cafes, beaming with life and excitement. An important trait of the Estoril coast is the climate factor, as it is mild all-year round.
To the west, many beaches surrounded by cliffs, in an almost untouched setting, part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.
The Estoril Coast hosts multiple international events from all areas: sailing, with the International sailing Federation (ISAF); motorsports, with the MotoGP championship; fashion, with Moda Lisboa - for the first time ever in the Cascais Fortress (Cidadela) and Moda Cascais; music, with the Cascais Jazz Festival, Cool Jazz Festival and Estoril Music Festival; arts and culture, with the Estoril Crafts Fair (FIARTIL), probably the oldest in the country, and the Cascais Cultural Centre's plastic arts programme.
The ArteMar project begins this way, by the hand of Agência Cascais Atlântico, in collaboration with the Cascais Town Hall and the D.Luís I Foundation.
